Look It Up!
That age-old advice will come in handy if you need to find contact information for a professor, classmate, or staff member while you're at UT.
Information associated with you, including your NetID, is stored in UT's online directory, and is publicly accessible. If you'll recall, we sent you there a few steps ago to retreive your NetID. Ah, the good old days.
In case you need a refresher, the UT Directory Services Homepage is located at http://directory.utk.edu. It allows you to look up public contact information for students, faculty, and staff at UT who have chosen to make this information available.
You can determine the amount and type of information that is published about you in the Directory. You may change some of your contact information by logging in and selecting "Change Contact Information." You'll notice, however, that some information cannot be changed from Directory.
Some of the directory fields are pulled from Student Records. If any of the information that you cannot change online is incorrect, you will need to contact the Registrar to have it changed and updated in the Directory. Should you need it, there's more information on the Student Records website regarding name changes, address changes, and privacy.
Privacy
Speaking of privacy, if you do not want information such as your name, address, or local phone number to be made public, you can learn more about the procedure for Directory Exclusion and other privacy requests on the Registrar's website.
Along those same lines, if you're interested in information about FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974), the Registrar offers a FERPA FAQ (including tutorial) on its website. There's even more information about the directory within that FAQ.
